Medical Matrix - offers annotated pointers to a hierarchical, comprehensive database of global resources that can assist in patient care. This Internet medical resource list is offered in hard copy, as an online text document, and as an Internet hypertext, hyperlinked database accessible using World Wide Web browsers like Netcape. It is designed as a "homepage" for a physician's or healthworker's desktop computer. The criteria for entry selection and ranking include utility for point of care clinical application, quality, currency, and unrestricted access. All resources are "full text" unless otherwise specified. Sites are reviewed by an editorial board drawn from the Internet Working Group of the American Medical Informatics Association.
Medscape - for health professionals and interested consumers, features peer-reviewed articles, "zoomable" color graphics, self-assessment features, medical news, Medline Reviews, and annotated links to Internet resources. Now with free medline access too!
MedWeb - a comprehensive list of medical links. MedWeb was created when Steve Foote began collecting and cataloging medical links in his spare time in April of 1994. Since then MedWeb has grown to over 7000 links, and is currently supported by the Emory University Health Sciences Center Library. MedWeb pages are now generated automatically using software written by Andy Kogelnik. Search options for MedWeb are now also available. MedWeb links are maintained by Steve Foote, Andy Kogelnik, and Bill Davis.

The Merck Manual - The Merck Manual is the most widely used medical text in the world. Written by over 300 experts, it covers all but the most obscure disorders. In addition to describing symptoms, common clinical procedures, laboratory tests, and virtually all the disorders that a general internist might encounter, The Manual deals with problems of pregnancy and delivery; common and serious disorders of neonates, infants, and children; genetics; drug dependency; psychiatric disorders; and many disorders covered by other specialties. The Manual also contains information about special circumstances, such as dental emergencies, reactions and injuries caused by radiation exposure, and problems encountered in deep-sea diving. Current therapy is presented for each disorder and supplemented with a separate section on clinical pharmacology.

NCQA - The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) is an independent,not-for-profit organization dedicated to assessing and reporting on the quality of managed care plans, including health maintenance organizations (HMOs). They are governed by a Board of Directors that includes employers, consumer and labor representatives, health plans, quality experts, regulators, and representatives from organized medicine.
NEJM - The New England Journal of Medicine On-line includes the complete text of many features of the print Journal and partial text of others. The current issue is available on the Web every week beginning Thursday morning. Past issues from 1996 are also available. Full text of the following features, including figures and tables, is available on-line: Images in Clinical Medicine, Case Records of the Massachusetts General Hospital (3 times a month), Molecular Medicine (monthly), Editorials, Sounding Board articles (opinion pieces), Correspondence, and Book Reviews. In addition, abstracts of Original Articles (reports of original clinical research) and Special Articles (reports of research on health policy) are available on-line, along with the names and institutional affiliations of the authors. If you wish to read an entire article, you may order it to be sent to you by mail or fax. For Review Articles and Brief Reports, which have no abstracts, only the titles and authors' names and affiliations are available on-line. You may order these articles to be sent to you as well.
NLM - the National Library of Medicine. A huge site where you can find practically everything from the Medline database to clinical practice guidelines.
1996 Nobel Prizes in Medicine - Peter Doherty and Rolf Zinkernagel have been awarded this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of how the immune system recognizes virus-infected cells. Their discovery has, in its turn, laid a foundation for an understanding of general mechanisms used by the cellular immune system to recognize both foreign microorganisms and self molecules. This discovery is therefore highly relevant to clinical medicine. It relates both to efforts to strengthen the immune response against invading microorganisms and certain forms of cancer, and to efforts to diminish the effects of autoimmune reactions in inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatic conditions, multiple sclerosis and diabetes.
Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases~National Resource Center - ORBD~NRC is a resource center that was created in 1994 through a grant from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. Its main purpose is to help health professionals, patients, and the public learn about and locate current information on metabolic bone diseases, such as osteoporosis, Paget's disease of bone, osteogenesis imperfecta, and hyperparathyroidism.

The Physician and Sportsmedicine Journal Online - another medical journal moves to the Internet!
Physician's Online - medline access outside of Emory that is free to all physicians. They do require a DEA number as proof of physician status.
PPS - this is a free site developed to present pharmaceutical information on newly released and available pharmaceutical products in your market area.
RxList - a free service to the Internet community. The RxList database consists primarily of products currently on the US market or close to approval.

Stanford Medical Informatics - the Section on Medical Informatics (SMI) is an interdisciplinary academic and research group within the Department of Medicine in the Stanford University School of Medicine. The SMI brings together researchers in medical informatics who are concerned with the use of information technology to solve problems in clinical medicine and the biomedical sciences.
Teaching Modules - This resource was developed as a collaborative effort between the Divisions of General Internal Medicine at Stanford University and the University of California at San Francisco. It is designed to enable sharing of useful primary care teaching modules amongst educators of medical students and residents in primary care specialties. While these modules are available to all users of the Internet, they are not intended as a primary source of information for patients.
The Virtual Hospital HomePage - The Virtual Hospital (VH) is a project of the Electric Differential Multimedia Laboratory, Department of Radiology, University of Iowa College of Medicine. It is a continuously updated digital health sciences library stored on computers and available over high speed networks 24 hours a day.
